International String Competition

Windsor Festival International String Competition

The next Windsor Festival International String Competition will take place at the Spring Festival in 2011. Further details will be announced in due course.

The inaugural Windsor Festival String Competition took place in 2008 to great acclaim, with the cellist Brian O’Kane winning the first prize. In 2009, Diana Galvydyte won First Prize and will be performing at this year’s Festival.

The competition not only highlights the influence that Lord Menuhin had in the founding of the Festival over forty years ago - his orchestra, family and friends being the chief participants in the early years - but also builds on his desire to provide more opportunities for young musicians. From a large list of entrants, eight are selected to play in the semi-finals. Four are then chosen to participate in the Final, during which the audience will have the opportunity to award a prize of their own. The panel of judges is formed of professional musicians and agents from a wide spectrum of backgrounds.

2009 First Prize:

  • Cash award of £1,500
  • A fine contemporary bow to the value of £4,000 (sponsored by Bishop Instruments & Bows)
  • Concerto with a leading UK orchestra
  • A number of local and international recitals including two at La Mortella, Ischia promoted by the William Walton Trust.

2009 Second Prize:

  • Cash award of £500
