Festival Heritage Walk - St John's Church, Shottesbrooke
Monday 22nd September, 2:30pm - St John's Church, Shottesbrooke
Built in 1377 it is one of only three collegiate churches in Berkshire – the others being St George’s Windsor and St Leonard’s Wallingford. The design is thought to be so typical of its time that it has been copied a number of times, notably at Kingswood Church, Surrey. The Victorian architect,William Butterfield, who designed Keble College, Oxford, wrote a book about the church and its design.
The Lord of the Manor of Shottesbrooke was one of the very few Saxons who survived the redistribution of land at the Conquest and, to this day, retains the right of refreshing the
crown at each coronation.
Shottesbrooke Park, in whose grounds the church is situated,
is the headquarters of the Landmark Trust.
