Windsor Festival Schools’ Programme

Now in its seventh year, the Festival is once again proud to present the Schools’ Programme for Senior Schools in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead. We received over 300 entries to the competition in 2009 and are continuing to build on this strong foundation, always with the aim of encouraging students to explore their imagination and creativity, whilst helping them to see beyond the school syllabus and National Curriculum.

We are pleased to be able to hold an exhibition of submitted works within the Grandstand at Ascot Racecourse during the weekend of 24th to 26th September. The exhibition is open to the public, free to all those who have submitted work and to anyone under 18 years old.

The Festival invites submissions from Years 10, 11 and 12 (those aged from 14 to 17 years old) in three subject areas:

  • Music Composition (Instrumental and Vocal)
  • Creative Writing (Poetry and Prose)
  • Art (Painting, Drawing, Textiles, Photography and 3D Sculpture)

Each subject area will be judged by a panel of highly qualified judges who will select works for exhibiting during the Festival. They will also award first, second and third place to individuals in each category. The Prize Giving will be held at Ascot Racecourse on Sunday 26th September, when all winners and their schools will be presented with prize money and certificates.

The judges for 2010 are as follows:

Music Composition

Stephen Burrows (Counter-tenor)
David Curington (Composer)
Gillian Dibden (Music Education Consultant and Choral Director)

Creative Writing

Fraser Jansen (Manager, Waterstone’s)
Alastair Niven (Principal of Cumberland Lodge, formerly Director of Literature at the Arts Council of England and the British Council)
The Revd Canon John White (Festival Chairman, Poet and Vice-Dean of The College of St George)

Art

Dominic Harper (Qualification Development Leader for Edexcel)
Sam Thomson (Head of Art at Slough Grammar School)
Elizabeth Vickers (Photographer)

Full submission details can be obtained from each of the schools, or downloaded here:
